Do come in! Make yourself at home.
Welcome to One Homely House, a blog dedicated to simple living and old-fashioned homemaking. I share family recipes that are just plain good cookin’, as well as homemaking skills and tips for making your life simpler and more meaningful. You don’t have to live on a farm or even in the country to benefit from this information–it’s about making your home life simple and cozy no matter where you live. I love helping people to learn old-fashioned skills or make something unique from basic materials!
This blog is for anyone who wants to create a cozy home from scratch. Whether you want to learn basic home management skills, try new (or old) ways of preserving the harvest, or just need help sewing on a button or learning how to wield an iron, I have something for you! It’s for those who don’t like throwing out so much waste from the grocery store, or just want to learn how to make more things from scratch.
In a cabin in the woods, there lived a family.
Not a squalid, dirty cabin, but one that was bright and clean (mostly), and even had running water! Hello, I’m Kimberly. I’m a wife and mother of two who traded her professional healthcare career for a home-centered life raising a family in Interior Alaska. We enjoy small-scale living in a 24×24′ cabin, and while homesteading is still a dream away, we definitely appreciate our little corner of peace and quiet in the woods!
I enjoy most of the domestic arts, especially those involving the kitchen. I learned to bake at a young age, and still spend a lot of time in the kitchen! My favorite kinds of recipes are old-fashioned and made from scratch, especially if they use ingredients that I can grow or forage myself! If I had to describe our family’s typical cuisine, I’d say we eat like Hobbits: simple, frugal, and with an emphasis on teatime and homemade breads.
I like learning how to be more self-sufficient, though it’s a slow process! Some day I would love to grow and raise most of our food, but for now I’m content with growing a small garden and a few pots of herbs and flowers–and keeping an energetic toddler from cheerfully destroying them!
The One Homely House Family
Our homely household is made up of my husband and myself, plus a 2 year-old and a baby. I love all three of my boys dearly, and I want to make our home a cheerful and welcoming place for them–a place to step back from the constant busyness of life and really “live the truth in love” (cf Eph 4:15).
